In 2022, Chestnut Street was repaved by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) contractors from 34th to 63rd streets. A portion of Walnut Street in West Philadelphia will be repaved in 2023.
Repaving projects create an opportunity for the City to reevaluate a street's layout and to change or upgrade it if something isn't working. The goals of both the Walnut and Chestnut Streets projects are to:
- Calm traffic by decreasing speeding, weaving, and aggressive driving.
- Create shorter and safer pedestrian crossings.
- Improve parking and loading operations.
- Increase safety for people riding bikes by separating them from motor vehicle traffic.
- Reduce illegal parking behaviors, like double-parking and blocking the crosswalk.
With Chestnut Street repaved, City staff is focusing on the Walnut Street layout and public outreach in 2022.
